Mauritania is a resource-rich economy spanning iron ore mining, fisheries, and emerging oil and gas production. SNIM is the state-owned iron ore company operating the massive Zouerate deposits. The country's Atlantic coast supports one of the world's richest fishing grounds. The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG project (shared with Senegal, BP/Kosmos) will transform Mauritania into a gas exporter. Renewable energy potential is enormous (solar irradiation and wind resources among the world's best). Challenges include desert geography, limited agricultural land, weak infrastructure, and governance concerns.
