About Broadway Bakery
Broadway Bakery Limited is one of Kenya's largest industrial bakeries, established in 1958 as a small scones bakery in Thika town, Kiambu County, by brothers Sobhagchand Shah and Ratilal Shah (of the Fulchand Lakhamshi family) before Kenyan independence. The bakery initially produced 45,000 scones daily and entered into a distribution partnership with Unga Limited (then producing Elliots bread) in 1968, when brothers Dalichand and Chunilal Shah joined the business. After the Unga partnership ended in 1977, Broadways purchased four acres of land and secured a KSh 15 million loan from Barclays Bank (now Absa Kenya) to build its own factory. Production grew from 70,000 loaves per day with the Baker Perkins plant (1979) to 170,000-240,000 loaves per day today through successive investments in Spooner (1981), Werner & Pfleiderer (1985, 1992, 2017), and Rondo (2018) bread and confectionery plants. The company employs approximately 500 people and posts around KSh 6 billion in annual revenue. Its flagship brands are Broadways Sliced White, Broadways Premium, Broadways Sandwich, and New Seneta. Management transferred to the second generation in 2000: Bimal Shah (MD, son of Sobhagchand) leads alongside cousins Hiten Shah and Bejul Shah. The third generation (Devan Bimal Shah, Rohin Hiten Shah) is now taking increasing responsibility. Broadways also owns Bakex Millers Limited (wheat flour brands Oboma and Vitafla, 250 tonnes/day milling capacity) and Albizzia Downs Estate Limited (real estate).
