Fourah Bay College, founded in 1827 in Freetown, is the oldest university in West Africa and the first modern university in sub-Saharan Africa. As a constituent college of the University of Sierra Leone, Fourah Bay has been called "the Athens of West Africa" and has educated generations of West African leaders and scholars.
