Niger is a major uranium producer (Orano/SOMAIR operations in Arlit) and emerging oil producer from the Agadem field (CNPC). The economy depends on subsistence agriculture, livestock, and mining. Following the July 2023 military coup and ECOWAS sanctions, Niger has reoriented its international partnerships. The country has one of the world's youngest populations (median age 15) and lowest HDI rankings. Uranium and oil exports, along with gold mining, remain the primary revenue sources.
