About Cape Coast Castle Museum
Cape Coast Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant historical monuments in West Africa, located in Cape Coast, Central Region, Ghana. Originally built by the Swedes in 1653 as a trading lodge and later expanded by the British, the castle was a central hub of the transatlantic slave trade for nearly 200 years, with hundreds of thousands of Africans passing through its infamous "Door of No Return" en route to enslavement in the Americas. Today, Cape Coast Castle operates as a museum under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, hosting international visitors, diaspora pilgrimages, educational tours, and commemorative events. The site was visited by former US President Barack Obama in 2009 and has become a symbol of the African diaspora's reconnection with the motherland.
