About Elmina Castle Museum

Elmina Castle (also known as São Jorge da Mina Castle) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in Elmina, Central Region, Ghana. Built by the Portuguese in 1482, Elmina is the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa and was the first major European slave-trading post on the West African coast. Captured by the Dutch in 1637 and later by the British in 1872, Elmina stands alongside Cape Coast Castle as a key monument of the transatlantic slave trade. Today, the castle operates as a museum and educational site, receiving thousands of international visitors, diaspora tourists, and students annually.
