Lord David Alliance was a British businessman and philanthropist who made significant contributions to multiple industries. He was the chairman and a major shareholder of N Brown Group plc, a clothing catalogue retailer, and co-founded Coats Viyella plc (now Coats Group plc), a global textile company operating in 67 countries. Additionally, he was a primary investor in SimilarWeb, a web measurement company. His investments spanned various sectors, including textiles, retail, technology, and real estate. In addition to his business ventures, Lord Alliance was deeply involved in philanthropy and public service. He served on several committees, including the Prince's Youth Business Trust, the Council for Industry and Higher Education, and the University of Manchester Foundation. He was also a senior trustee of the Next Century Foundation and served on the Board of Governors of Tel Aviv University in Israel. His philanthropic efforts extended to rescuing Ethiopian Jews from Sudan and Ethiopia, bringing them to Israel between 1984 and 1991. Lord Alliance was recognized for his contributions with several honors, including being appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1984 and receiving a knighthood in 1989. He was created a life peer as Baron Alliance, of Manchester in the County of Greater Manchester, on 1 July 2004, and sat on the Liberal Democrat benches until his retirement on 21 March 2025. He passed away on 18 July 2025 at the age of 93.
