BUA Sugar Refinery
Sub-Saharan Africa's second-largest sugar refinery
About BUA Sugar Refinery
BUA Sugar Refinery is the sugar-refining subsidiary of BUA Foods PLC and operates the second-largest sugar refinery in sub-Saharan Africa, commissioned in 2008 in Port Harcourt. The refinery broke an eight-year monopoly in the Nigerian sugar industry and competes directly with Dangote Sugar Refinery. BUA Sugar produces refined white sugar for household and industrial consumption and is engaged in backward integration through sugar plantations under the Nigerian Sugar Master Plan. A USD 200 million backward integration facility was completed in 2021 to reduce raw sugar imports and foster local production.
