About KNUST Intermediate Technology Transfer Unit

The Intermediate Technology Transfer Unit (ITTU) at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Kumasi is a technology transfer centre established to support skills development and technology dissemination to artisans in Suame Magazine. At its peak between 1980-1990, the ITTU established an iron foundry, machine shop, and welding/steel fabrication facilities to introduce more sophisticated engineering techniques to local enterprises. The unit transferred capstan lathes, milling and gear hobbing machines, and iron melting furnaces to Suame artisans, enabling production of bolts, nuts, gears, chain sprocket wheels, and recycled cast iron scraps.
