Africa has over 149,028 startups, with 12.6K funded companies raising $182B in venture capital and private equity. In 2026, $5.07B was raised in 133 equity funding rounds, a 445% rise compared to 2025.
Africa’s startup ecosystem continues to expand rapidly, with over 149,000 companies now operating across the continent. Among these, 12,600 have secured funding, collectively raising $182 billion in venture capital and private equity. The region has produced 13 unicorns, while 5,200 investors have participated in 13,700 funding rounds. Early-stage funding supported 624 startups, and late-stage rounds benefited 344, reflecting growing investor confidence. Over the past five years, 14,700 new companies were founded, raising over $792 million, while 25,500 startups closed operations. Women-led startups account for 2,400 of these companies. The ecosystem has also seen significant exits, with 1,960 acquisitions and 2,200 IPOs recorded. In 2026 alone, funding surged by 445% to $5.07 billion across 133 rounds, compared to $930 million in the same period in 2025. Top companies like Flutterwave, Jumia, and MTN highlight the diversity of sectors, from fintech to e-commerce and telecoms. Investors such as Europa, HHS, and USAID are playing key roles, with Europa leading in deal volume. The report underscores Africa’s potential as a high-growth market for businesses and investors, despite challenges like startup failures and fluctuating investor activity.
