1000 Ocean Startups

1000 Ocean Startups is a coalition established in 2021 to accelerate ocean impact innovation. The coalition unites a global ecosystem of incubators, accelerators, competitions, matching platforms, and venture capital firms supporting startups focused on ocean health. Its objective is to scale at least 1,000 transformative startups by the end of the Ocean Decade to restore ocean health and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 14. The coalition's strategy involves building synergies among existing players, attracting new investors, and catalyzing new investment. By mainstreaming ocean impact innovation and bringing the ecosystem to maturity, 1000 Ocean Startups aims to address challenges such as marine pollution, ecosystem protection, sustainable blue food, sustainable ocean economy, and the ocean-climate nexus. Members have mobilized nearly $1.5 billion in assets under management and have supported over 350 ocean health startups. Through initiatives like the Ocean Impact Navigator, the coalition provides startups with critical mentorship, networks, visibility, and funding. This framework helps assess and report the positive impacts of investments, contributing to the development of scientific knowledge and advancing practices in the impact finance sector. By fostering collaboration and innovation, 1000 Ocean Startups plays a pivotal role in regenerating ocean health and sustaining equitable ocean wealth.
