About UNICEF Innovation Fund
The UNICEF Innovation Fund is a pooled funding vehicle established by UNICEF to quickly assess, fund, and grow open-source solutions developed in emerging markets. Its primary focus is on early-stage, open-source technology solutions that have the potential to benefit children, particularly in areas where access to such technologies is limited. The Fund aims to identify and support innovative solutions that can positively impact the lives of vulnerable children globally. The Fund provides equity-free investments ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 for early-stage projects and $200,000 to $400,000 for growth-stage initiatives. These investments are intended to help innovators validate and test their prototypes, bringing them to a stage where they can demonstrate proof of concept. The Fund also offers technical assistance and mentorship to selected startups, connecting them with a network of experts and resources to support their growth and scalability. Since its inception, the UNICEF Innovation Fund has invested in a diverse portfolio of 147 initiatives, including 81 startups in countries where UNICEF operates. The Fund aims to expand its portfolio by 30 investments annually, focusing on sectors such as climate resilience, women's health, and digital literacy. By fostering innovation in these areas, the Fund seeks to address pressing challenges faced by children and communities worldwide, leveraging technology to drive social impact and improve outcomes for children. The UNICEF Innovation Fund operates through a transparent selection process, launching calls for applications that focus on specific technologies or challenges. This approach allows the Fund to identify and support a wide range of innovative solutions, from blockchain and artificial intelligence to data science and machine learning. By investing in these frontier technologies, the Fund aims to shape markets and guide technological advancements to benefit children, ensuring that innovations are accessible and impactful in diverse contexts. Through its strategic investments and collaborative efforts, the UNICEF Innovation Fund continues to play a pivotal role in advancing open-source technologies that address critical issues affecting children globally. Its commitment to equity-free funding and support for underrepresented founders strengthens local innovation ecosystems, fostering sustainable solutions that contribute to the well-being and development of children worldwide.
