About Market Theatre Foundation

The Market Theatre is one of South Africa's most historically significant theatres, located in Newtown, Johannesburg. Founded in 1976 during apartheid, the Market Theatre became known as "The Theatre of the Struggle" for producing groundbreaking plays that challenged apartheid, including Athol Fugard's "Sizwe Banzi Is Dead" and "The Island", Mbongeni Ngema's "Woza Albert!", and many others that toured internationally to great acclaim. Today the Market Theatre Foundation operates as a non-profit cultural institution nurturing South African theatre, film, music, photography, and laboratory arts, and is one of the continent's most respected arts centres.
