About National Stokvel Association of South Africa

The National Stokvel Association of South Africa (NASASA) is the umbrella body representing South African stokvels - indigenous community-based savings and credit groups where members contribute regularly and take turns receiving the collective pot. South African stokvels collectively manage approximately ZAR 50 billion annually across an estimated 800,000 stokvels with 11 million members, making them one of the most significant forms of indigenous African community finance. Stokvels have existed in South Africa for over a century and are a cornerstone of informal economy savings and mutual support, particularly in townships and rural communities.
