Farmer's Choice

Farmer's Choice Limited is Kenya's market leader in the production of sausages, bacon, ham, and fresh pork products, with a growing beef and lamb portfolio. The company was founded in 1980, having evolved from East Africa Meat Products (originally Kenya Meat Processors Ltd) which had started as a roadside butchery on Thika Road in 1975 under the management of the Block Hotel Group family. Ownership has changed hands multiple times: from the Block family to Lonrho Group in March 1989, then to Industrial Promotion Services (IPS), the industrial arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, in 2000. The company is headquartered in Kahawa West, Nairobi on a 10-acre site that houses its slaughterhouse and processing plant, with a 33-acre pig farm operation. Farmer's Choice employs over 1,500 people and produces approximately 10 million sausages per week, with more than 40 sausage varieties. The company is ISO 22000 compliant, meeting FAO, WHO, and EU hygiene standards, and was the first entity allowed to export pork to Dubai. It exports to Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Ethiopia, Oman, Bahrain, and the UAE, with new markets being developed in West Africa. A subsidiary Halal-certified beef slaughterhouse operates under the "Choice Meats" brand. The company supports an estimated 600,000 livelihoods through its network of over 100,000 smokie vendors across Kenya.
