About Nation Media Group

Nation Media Group PLC (NMG) is the largest independent media house in East and Central Africa, with operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda, and over 30 media brands reaching more than 62 million digital users across the region. The group employs more than 1,000 professionals and is listed on four stock exchanges: the Nairobi Securities Exchange (since 1973), the Uganda Securities Exchange, the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, and the Rwanda Stock Exchange. NMG was founded in 1959 by the late Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV, as East African Newspapers (Nation Series) Ltd, with the vision of providing Kenya a free, independent press to promote democratic governance at independence. Its inaugural publication was the Kiswahili weekly Taifa Leo, followed by the first issue of the Daily Nation on 20 March 1960. The Group's Kenyan brands include the Daily Nation, Sunday Nation, Business Daily, The EastAfrican, Taifa Leo, Nation FM, NTV Kenya, Nation.Africa, and Nairobi News; Ugandan brands include Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, KFM, and Dembe FM; Tanzanian brands include Mwananchi, The Citizen, and Mwanaspoti. In March 2026, the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) announced the sale of its 54.08% shareholding (held through NPRT Holdings Africa Limited) to Taarifa Limited, a company owned by Tanzanian businessman Rostam Azizi, concluding AKFED's 66-year association with NMG.
