TPS Eastern Africa PLC, trading as Serena Hotels, is a premier hospitality company headquartered in Nairobi and listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange under the ticker TPS. The company operates 33 luxury hotels, resorts, safari lodges, and camps across eight countries in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mozambique) and Central/South Asia (Pakistan, Tajikistan), and is managed under Tourism Promotion Services (TPS), an arm of the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED). AKFED holds 64.58% of TPS Eastern Africa PLC and the Aga Khan University Foundation holds a further 2.42%. Serena Hotels was established in 1970 as an initiative by the late Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, Aga Khan IV (49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims, who passed away in Lisbon on 4 February 2025 aged 88), with a vision to develop tourism as a catalyst for economic growth, cultural heritage preservation, and environmental sustainability. The group's flagship property, Nairobi Serena Hotel, opened on 16 February 1976. In FY2024 the group reported a 5.18% increase in turnover to KSh 10.19 billion, a profit after tax of KSh 1.32 billion, and employed 3,223 people across its East African operations. Kenyan properties include Nairobi Serena, Mara Serena Safari Lodge, Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge, Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge, Lake Elmenteita Serena Camp, Sweetwaters Serena Camp (Ol Pejeta), and Serena Beach Resort & Spa Mombasa. The group targets net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 and has planted approximately 6.7 million trees since 1991 across its East African reforestation programme.
