Volta Aluminum Company

Volta Aluminum Company Limited (VALCO) is Ghana's aluminium smelter located in Tema, originally built in 1967 as part of the Kaiser Aluminum-Volta River Project to leverage hydroelectric power from the Akosombo Dam on the Volta River. VALCO has a capacity of 200,000 tonnes of primary aluminium per annum, though operations have been periodically suspended due to power and financial challenges. The company represents Ghana's industrial heritage linking the Volta River hydroelectric scheme to downstream manufacturing.
