Kiira Motors Corporation

Kiira Motors Corporation (KMC) is a Ugandan state-owned enterprise established in 2014 to develop the domestic automotive value chain and commercialize electric vehicle projects. The company is owned by the Government of Uganda (96%) and Makerere University (4%). KMC's mission is to contribute to Uganda's industrialization by producing vehicles tailored to the local and regional market, with a focus on electric and hybrid vehicles. The company has developed several notable vehicles, including the Kiira EV, Africa's first electric vehicle, the Kiira EVS, a hybrid electric vehicle sedan, and the Kayoola Solar Bus, a battery electric vehicle with a real-time solar charging system. These innovations aim to promote sustainable mobility and reduce reliance on imported vehicles. KMC's manufacturing plant is equipped to support the production of up to 60,000 vehicles per year, employing over 2,000 people. The plant's establishment is expected to catalyze investment by small and medium enterprises in the manufacture of vehicle parts, components, and autonomy systems, contributing to the industrialization agenda and the transformation of Uganda into an upper middle-income economy by 2040. KMC's strategic technology partnerships are premised on four pillars: People, Plant, Products, Mobility Infrastructure, and Policy. These partnerships aim to build core capabilities to develop, make, and sell motor vehicles and components in Africa, contributing to the company's mission of building a better Uganda through automotive technology.
